An Insight into Interior Design: Q&A with TileCiti

One of the most important considerations when it comes to creating your dream home is the interior design. After all, this is what you’ll be looking at every single day once construction is complete.

While it can seem like there’s a lot riding on your interior design choices, it doesn’t have to be a daunting task to select your home’s finishes. At Ramsay Builders, we offer an Interactive Design Studio to make the design stage of your home a breeze. We are lucky enough to work closely with the expert interior design team at TileCiti in this space. To gain a deeper insight into the world of interior design, we thought we’d sit down with the team from TileCiti to chat all things design.

Ramsay Builders: Where do you start when it comes to designing a clients’ dream home?

TileCiti: We always look at our clients’ lifestyle, any particular tastes they may have and any visions or ideas they’ve got in mind for their new home. We also check whether they have saved images from the internet or magazines that communicate the end result they hope to achieve. We always try to keep in mind the best possible way to achieve a look within our clients’ desired budget.

RB: What’s the best way to select a tile (and other features) that will work with the overall design?

TC: A good design flows through the house as a whole – starting with the exterior and flowing into the interior and the backyard. When selecting tiles, keep in mind the size and shape of your rooms and aim to complement this shape with a tile size or laying pattern that suits it. Where possible, keep the same tile flowing through all floors that may meet at a doorway.

Clients are always inspired by what they see on TV or on the internet, but when considering a feature tile, you need to think about other elements within the space. Think about the other colours, patterns and textures that you’ll have and ask yourself – is this going to be a feature that will complement other aspects of the room or is there too much happening?

RB: Have you been seeing any particular designs trending among clients recently?

TC: We’ve noticed the Hamptons style coming up quite often because it’s a versatile, timeless and elegant design style that can be easily replicated on a budget. Large format tiles have also become increasingly popular, especially in modern and contemporary designs.

RB: What are some of your top design tips?

TC: Think about what you’re trying to achieve and create a design that truly makes you happy. Don’t focus too much on what’s trending – at the end of the day you’re the one who will be living there so you’re ultimately the only ones who need to enjoy the space.

RB: Are there any interior mistakes or traps that people should avoid?

TC: As designers, we try and keep structural elements simple and play with accessories. This allows the clients to add their own personality and keep up with the design trends. People should also avoid trying to cram too many design elements into one interior space.

RB: How has technology changed the way you approach design and helping clients create their dream homes?

TC: Technology now allows clients to visualise their dream home with rendering programs, layout concepts and design features for cabinetry. Many clients struggle to visualise spaces and design, so technology is helping clients see their dream home come to life before it’s built. The internet has also had a massive impact as clients can now search a design with the tip of their finger.

RB: Where do you see the future of the industry heading?

TC: Technology is changing the design industry. Programs and services now on offer by builders make it easier for clients to visualise and understand what they are building, the scale of it all and ensure elements like colour are exactly what they are looking for.
